Geneva: Dr. Marwan Obaid Al Muhairi, a member of the Federal National Council Parliamentary Division at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), took part in the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security meeting during the 151st IPU Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland. The meeting focused on the role of parliaments in establishing effective post-conflict mechanisms for the restoration of just and lasting peace.
According to Emirates News Agency, Al Muhairi, during the UAE Parliamentary Division’s intervention, emphasized that post-conflict parliamentary work should be guided by three main principles: rebuilding trust, reinforcing the rule of law, and promoting sustainable development. He highlighted the UAE’s status as a global leader in providing humanitarian aid, supporting reconstruction, and empowering communities affected by conflict. Additionally, Al Muhairi noted that the UAE has implemented national legislation to protect society from extremism and violence while advancing the protection of women, children, and human rights.
Al Muhairi also underscored the importance of ongoing evaluation of parliamentary efforts in collaboration with international partners. He called for enhanced parliamentary oversight of policies and budgets to ensure they meet international peace and security requirements. He further elaborated on the critical role of parliaments in ensuring justice, building trust, and fostering sustainable peace.
In a subsequent discussion on arms control, non-proliferation, and preventing future arms races, Al Muhairi pointed out that arms control is vital for international security, particularly in light of challenges like the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and the rapid militarization of advanced technologies. He affirmed the UAE’s commitment to non-proliferation and disarmament through its participation in international treaties and enforcement of stringent national laws against illicit arms trafficking.
Al Muhairi concluded by stating that preventing an arms race necessitates international cooperation, with parliaments serving as the voice of the people and key defenders of global peace and security. He emphasized the need to invest in future generations to cultivate a culture of peace and human coexistence.
