UNHCR: Situations for Civilians in Gaza and Lebanon Worsen by the Day

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR) spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating situations for civilians in Gaza and Lebanon.

Speaking at a press conference in Geneva, Shamdasani said that Beirut, Lebanon’s densely populated capital, is under intensified Israeli airstrikes that result in hundreds of deaths and the displacement of over a million people across the country. The relentless strikes have caused widespread destruction, forcing civilians to flee their homes in search of safety.

In Gaza, the situation is equally dire, with Shamdasani highlighting the ongoing “horrific humanitarian suffering” as Israeli military operations intensify in northern Gaza. The increased bombardment has further isolated the area from the rest of Gaza Strip, leaving civilians in grave danger.

Over the past few days, there have been reports of air raids, heavy shelling, and ground incursions targeting residential areas, resulting in numerous injuries and mass displa
cement of Palestinians. Hospitals have also been targeted in the attacks, exacerbating the crisis.

The Israeli army has repeatedly ordered Palestinians in northern Gaza to evacuate, but many remain trapped, unable to move safely due to the ongoing violence and lack of secure escape routes, Shamdasani said.
