United Arab Emirates University Hosts Influential Higher Education Forum in Ethiopia

Addis ababa: The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) hosted the QS Africa 2026 Higher Education Forum in Addis Ababa, Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, from 9-10 July 2026. The forum brought together ministers, university leaders, academics, experts, and representatives from higher education institutions, government, industry, and civil society in collaboration with QS. According to Emirates News Agency, the forum marked a significant milestone for UAEU as it celebrated its Golden Jubilee. Prof. Ahmed Ali Al Raeesi, Vice Chancellor of UAEU, highlighted the forum's importance, reflecting on the University's establishment under the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who believed in investing in education as a paramount societal investment. He acknowledged the global challenges such as climate change and food security, urging for innovative solutions and empowering youth with knowledge and education. Prof. Kindeya Gebrehiwot, State Minister and Advisor at the Ministry of Education of Ethiopia, underscored the necessity of collaboration for advancing higher education and national development. He emphasized that universities need strong partnerships with industry, government, and other academic institutions to enhance innovation and societal impact. He described youth as the foundation of progress, advocating for quality education and opportunities in innovation and entrepreneurship. The forum included panel discussions and dialogues focused on the future of higher education in Africa, addressing topics like developing future skills, enhancing employability, student and researcher mobility, and the impact of artificial intelligence in academia. Participants stressed the importance of aligning skills development with sustainable development goals and the role of universities in fostering national talent and innovation. Further discussions highlighted the need to update academic curricula to meet labor market demands, enhance digital, leadership, and research skills, and provide applied learning opportunities. Participants advocated for considering graduate employability as a key quality indicator of university outcomes and their national development contributions. Artificial intelligence was recognized as a strategic pillar for education and research, with calls for ethical principles in technology use, enhanced cooperation among universities, and global partnerships fostering knowledge exchange. The forum concluded by emphasizing integrating research and community service into universities' core missions, supporting areas like food security, healthcare, and climate change adaptation. Participants agreed that collaborative and innovative universities with strong international partnerships are best positioned for sustainable impact.
